04/15/08 :: CH2M HILL TRIGON VICE PRESIDENT ADDRESSES API CONFERENCE
Stu Asselin, CH2M HILL Trigon Vice President, Pipelines and Terminals, addressed the 2008 American Petroleum Institute (API) Pipeline Conference in Orlando, Florida, in April. API is a national trade association representing all aspects of America's oil and natural gas industry.
Stu spoke on the topic of bundled services and integrated team delivery for pipeline and facilities projects. Stu began by defining bundled services as including traditional consulting, detailed engineering and design, and field services including ROW acquisition, survey, procurement, construction management, and inspection. In short, bundled services firms offer full project life cycle services.
Stu reviewed the history of in-house services provided by operating companies, the evolution of engineering firms bringing bundled services to the marketplace as operating companies downsized their project teams, and the pros and cons of using bundled service companies. In summary, Stu believes that busy energy markets will drive operating companies to use bundled service engineering firms, and those firms offering bundled services are faster, more efficient, and provide lower risk and lower cost for energy projects. He also believes that operating companies are not likely to rebuild their internal project teams. The toughest challenge for firms offering bundled services is to attract, develop and retain top talent.
CH2M HILL's new Energy and Chemicals group, including the Pipelines and Terminals unit, offers full bundled services for pipeline and facilities projects - up to and including construction.
